Can I go kayaking/canoeing with my period?

It's not like I'm immersing myself into the water, but if the boat flips then I'm screwed (I'll be using a pad, no tampons). What is the likelihood of my period blood actually leaking if my pants do get wet? If my pad gets completely absorbed, would any more blood just flow out of the pad? One of my friends went sailing and used a pad - blood leaked through her wetsuit and onto the boat (the boat was yellow, so it was pretty noticeable).
