How do i ask out my friend who is...?

lets say my friends name is… "Jay" okay well "jay" is a player and hes gone out with two of my friends and hes cheated on both of them with each other. once he asked me out and i told him i would answer him the next day and later that day i asked my frend who was going out with him at the time (but i had no idea) so i asked her if i should say yes and she sayd how could he ask u out if hes going out with me and then the next day she broke up with him so my question is should i ask him out cuz im afraid to get hurt.
